The coal tar and coke-oven gases generated during ironmaking serve as useful feedstock for coal chemistry and iron/steel chemistry. Making effective use of these iron and steel by-products stands at the heart of the Nippon Steel Chemical Group that, in the course of its business operations, can safely be said to have demonstrated a spectacularly successful history of recycling.
By combining petrochemistry with many years of accumulated expertise, the Nippon Steel Chemical Group has been able to create a rich product line that includes: basic chemicals, plastics and fine chemicals. |

Aromatic and Other Basic Chemicals
Produced by Proprietary Processes
|
| The Nippon Steel Chemical
Group supplies basic
chemicals that are produced by organically integrating
coal chemistry, which uses coal tar, cokeoven
gases etc. as its main raw materials, with petrochemistry,
which uses naphtha, cracked gasoline
and reformate as its main feedstock.
In addition to basic chemicals that include sty-rene
monomers, acid phthalic anhydrides, phenols and
bisphenol A, the group manufactures and markets
such aromatic chemicals as benzene, toluene and
xylene. These chemicals de-monstrate reliable
quality and excellent cost performance because of
the proprietary processes and the uniquely distinct
structure
of the raw materials used in their manufacture. |

Tohto Kasei Co., Ltd.
Employing its own proprietary technology,
Tohto Kasei in 1969 became the first

production of epoxy resins. Since then,
the company has continued to rely on
the strength of its technological capabilities
to establish itself as a leading manufacturer
of epoxy resins in Japan.
The company operates plants in Chiba
and Kobe that are key production centers,
while its Mita plant produces secondary-
processed products. Tohto Kasei,
together with Kukdo Chemical in
Korea, is spearheading operations in phenol

Kumho P&B Chemicals, Inc.
Kumho P&B Chemicals was established in
2000 as a joint venture between Nippon
Steel Chemical and the Kumho Group of
Korea. The company constructed a bisphenol-
A production plant with an annual
capacity of 100,000 tons at its
Yosu Plant in Cholla Nam-do, Korea,
which started operations in January
2003. With its Seoul Branch that opened
in 2002 as an operating base, Nippon
Steel Chemical is meeting the growing
demand in Korea for bisphenol-A that is
destined for polycarbonates and other
